Born near Thun (Switzerland) in 1944. After a first vocational training as a draftsman he got his high-school diploma, afterwards studying Mathematics, Physics and Mathematical Statistics at the University of Bern, where he graduated in Mathematics in 1972.\\ | Born 24.07.1944. |
From 1974 he was active for 33 years as the scientific expert in ballistics at the Testcenter for Ballistics, Weapons and Ammunition of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) of Switzerland. He mainly dealt with exterior ballistics, aerodynamics of projectiles, ballistic protection and mostly with wound ballistics. In 1995 he became consultant for wound ballistics at the Institute for Legal Medicine in Bern and in 1999 he earned a PhD in Forensic Science at the “École des Sciences Criminelles” of the Legal Faculty at the University of Lausanne. In view of his forthcoming retirement from MoD, in 2007 Dr Beat Kneubuehl was summoned by the then Head of the Institute of Legal Medicine at the University of Bern to join the Institute, where he was was entrusted with the task of building up a new Centre for “Forensic Physics and Ballistics”, of which he was the team leader until 2014.\\ | |
Beat Kneubuehl has published a great deal of specialist literature and reports for military, judicial and police expert commissions. He gave innumerable lectures in ballistics and wound ballistics and worked as an expert in several courts at home and abroad. For years, Beat Kneubuehl has instructed medicine and law students in wound ballistics during their studies in Bern and Zurich and ‐ in collaboration with the ICRC in Geneva ‐ hundreds of surgeons from all over the world. In the year 2010 Dr Beat Kneubuehl was awarded the title of honorary doctor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Bern because of his basic research in the physic of shot wounds. In 2014 he earned the "Konrad-Haendel"-Award of the German Socitety of Legal Medicine for his life work in wound ballistics.\\ | Attended school in Thun. Apprenticeship as a civil engineering draughtsman (specialising in reinforced concrete construction). |
After July 2014 he founded its private company where he is presently working as private consultant for forensic ballistics, physics and criminalistics. | |
1963 After completing his apprenticeship, prepares for the Federal Matura examination at the Dr. Feusi public school in Bern. Federal Maturity Examination Type C in St. Gallen, 1965.

1965-1972 Studies at the University of Berne (major in mathematics, minor in physics and mathematical statistics and insurance theory). Autumn 1972 graduates with a licentiate (diploma) in mathematics.

1967-1972 (during his studies) part-time and from 1972-1974 full-time teacher of mathematics and physics at the high school department of the Feusi schools in Bern.

April 1974 joined the Ballistics/Shooting Tests Division of the Armament Group (today: armasuisse, Science and Technology) of the Swiss Ministry of Defence (DDPS). Scientific activities first in the fields of trajectory measuring, ballistics and aerodynamics, later additionally in wound ballistics, ballistic protection and forensic ballistics. Various publications and lectures at international symposia (Europe, USA, China, Japan) on the subjects of ballistics, aerodynamics, wound ballistics, testing methodology for protective body armour and helmets.

From 1983, occasional advice to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on ballistics and ballistic protection.

1987-1993 Attended seminars in the field of philosophy of science at the philosophical institute of the University of Bern.

1992 Start of a close cooperation with the ICRC lasting until 2017 (ballistic and wound ballistic training of war surgeons and in the field of international conventions concerning firearms).

In 1994, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) submits a proposal for the reformulation of international conventions to the UN Permanent Conference on Disarmament, based on his work in the field of wound ballistics, which is supported by many states and organisations.

1995 Establishment of the first Swiss test centre for bullet-resistant, burglar-resistant and blast-resistant materials and constructions (fasif), head until 2003. Member of various working groups of the "Comité Européen de Normalisation" (CEN) in the fields of bullet-resistant and blast-resistant materials and constructions, protective body armour. Development of a new test method for protective body armour, which makes it possible to determine the probability of bullet penetration and thus to assess the effective protection much better. The method was adopted in international test standards.

1996-2006 Consultant for Forensic Ballistics and Wound Ballistics at the Institute of Forensic Medicine of the University of Bern.

1997-1999 (exclusively in his spare time) studies of forensic sciences at the "École des Sciences Criminelles" of the University of Lausanne. Graduated with a doctorate in forensic sciences. Thesis topic: "The ricochet of bullets from a forensic point of view".

1999 Initiator for the foundation of the European Association of Testing Bodies for Attack Resistant Materials and Constructions (VPAM), chairman until 2009. The VPAM is currently the most important standard-setting organisation in Europe in the relevant field.

2002-2010 Lecturer in forensic ballistics at the "École des Sciences Criminelles" of the University of Lausanne.

2004 Appointment as corresponding member of the German Society of Forensic Medicine (DGRM) "in recognition of special services to the interests of forensic medicine".

2006 (end of year) Leaving the DDPS (early retirement).

2007-07.2014 Establishment and head of the Centre for Forensic Physics / Ballistics at the Institute of Forensic Medicine of the University of Bern.

2010 Awarded an honorary doctorate by the Medical Faculty of the University of Bern. (from the laudation: "... the pioneer in the field of developing synthetic body models and experimental analysis methods for answering medical forensic and reconstructive questions and facts. The pioneer of physics-based effectiveness functions for new UN humanitarian conventions. The tireless mediator between the sciences of physics and medicine, who has steadfastly and humbly in his nature brought clarity to the frontier between medicine and physics, especially in wound ballistics, through his many years of passionate engagement in science, research and teaching.").

2014 Founding of bpk-consultancy gmbh.

2014 Awarded the Konrad Händel Prize of the German Society of Forensic Medicine (DGRM) in recognition of "outstanding scientific achievements" ("... has thus served the importance of forensic medicine for the tasks of the justice in a very special way and has rendered great services to forensic medicine.").
