Born near Thun (Switzerland) in 1944. After a first vocational training as a draftsman he got his high-school diploma, afterwards studying Mathematics, Physics and Mathematical Statistics at the University of Bern, where he graduated in Mathematics in 1972.
From 1974 he was active for 33 years as the scientific expert in ballistics at the Testcenter for Ballistics, Weapons and Ammunition of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) of Switzerland. He mainly dealt with exterior ballistics, aerodynamics of projectiles, ballistic protection and mostly with wound ballistics. In 1995 he became consultant for wound ballistics at the Institute for Legal Medicine in Bern and in 1999 he earned a PhD in Forensic Science at the “École des Sciences Criminelles” of the Legal Faculty at the University of Lausanne. In view of his forthcoming retirement from MoD, in 2007 Dr Beat Kneubuehl was summoned by the then Head of the Institute of Legal Medicine at the University of Bern to join the Institute. He was entrusted with the task of building up a new Centre for “Forensic Physics and Ballistics”, of which he was the team leader until 2014.
Beat Kneubuehl has published a great deal of specialist literature and reports in ballistics and wound ballistics for military, judicial and police expert commissions. He gave innumerable lectures in these fields and worked as an expert in several courts at home and abroad. For years, Beat Kneubuehl has instructed medicine and law students in wound ballistics during their studies at the Universities of Bern, Zurich and Lausanne and ‐ in collaboration with the ICRC in Geneva ‐ hundreds of surgeons from all over the world. In the year 2010 Dr Beat Kneubuehl was awarded the title of honorary doctor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Bern because of his basic research in the physic of shot wounds. In 2014 he earned the „Konrad-Haendel“-Award of the German Socitety of Legal Medicine for his life work in wound ballistics.
After July 2014 he founded its private company where he is presently working as private consultant for forensic ballistics, physics and criminalistics.
